The Council of the Arts Undergraduate Society meets every other Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:00 pm, beginning September 7, 2011, in Leacock 232. Meetings of the AUS are open to the general public, and minutes will be posted online once council resumes in Fall 2011.
The AUS is governed by a Constitution. The day-to-day tasks of the AUS are managed by the Executive Committee of the AUS, which is comprise dof a President and the Vice-Presidents Academic, Finance, Internal, External, Events and Communications. The Executive Committee reports to the AUS Council, which must approve all AUS spending and policy. Meetings of the AUS Council are public, so you can see what's going on just by showing up. Additionally, meeting minutes are a part of the public record and are available here.
The AUS Council also includes various sub-committees which are given specific mandates. The Financial Management Committee (FMC), for example, discusses all budgetary and spending concerns, and the Constitution and By-Law Review Committee (CBRC) discusses proposed revisions to the AUS Constitution and By-Laws, and those of its departmental associations.
Minutes, past motions and how-to-guides for councilors are available here.
AUS Council is comprised of the Executive Committee, the Arts Representatives to SSMU Council, the Arts Senators and one representative from each departmental association (traditionally, but not always, the VP External).
Elections for positions on the AUS Executive Committee are held every March.
Another way to get involved is through your department. If you study Art History, for example, you can join the Art History Students' Association. Some departments have elections in the winter term but many smaller associations have less formal procedures for being represented on AUS Council. Try attending a departmental association's council meeting or volunteering through your department. If you're looking for ways to get in touch with student representatives from your departmental association, drop by the AUS office and we'd be happy to help.
